Bottlenose dolphin

Pacific bottlenose dolphin

In the World Ocean there are no less than 4 sub-species of bottlenose dolphins, slightly different in appearance and features of the skull. Among them:

  • The Black Sea bottlenose dolphin (T.t.ponticus) lives in the Black Sea
  • Bottlenose dolphin (T.t.truncatus) lives in the Pacific ocean
  • Far-east bottlenose dolphin (T.t.gilli, Dall, 1873) lives in temperate North part of Pacific Ocean
  • Indian bottlenose dolphin (T.t.aduncus). Some zoologists allocate them to separate species (Tursiops aduncus). They have longer beak and larger number of teeth (28 pairs, instead of usual 19-24). They live in the Red Sea, in the Indian and the Pacific Oceans.

Main food of these marine mammals is different kinds of fish: trout, pink salmon, salmon, mackerel, anchovies, mullet, capelin, squid. Adult dolphin can eat 8-15 kg of fish per day.

Pacific bottlenose dolphins live sedentary or migrate in small flocks. Their tendency to coastal zone can be explained by their specific nutrition style. They breathe captive 1-4 times per minute and their heart beats 80-140 (average 100) times per minute. They can reach speed up to 40 km / h and jump to a height of 5 m.

These dolphins skillfully manage complex vocal apparatus to communicate with each other by making communication signals from 7 to 20 kHz. When searching for prey and for better orientation under water they produce echolocation click, with frequency of 20-170 kHz. American scientists have recorded 17 communicative signals of adult bottlenose dolphins, and only 6 signals of the pups.

They sleep like others cetaceans, at the water surface. During the process of sleeping only one hemisphere of dolphin sleeps alternately, the other at this time awake. After one hemisphere rest, it wakes up and another hemisphere goes to sleep, and so on during the entire time that is needed for the dolphin to rest. Both hemispheres sleep alternately, changing roles several times during sleep.
